Legend says that on the night before he was to be executed, St. Valentine sent a note of friendship to the daughter of the jailer, whom Valentine had befriended during his time in prison. He signed it "from your Valentine," and created the tradition of sending kind notes to those you love on Valentine's Day.

During the days that Valentine was imprisoned, he made friends with the blind daughter of his jailer. His affection for her and his great faith, managed to miraculously heal her from her blindness before his death. Before he was taken to his death (Feb. 14th, the date of his execution), he signed a farewell message to her, "From your Valentine".
