At the time of World War I, Canada was a British dominion. Britain's declaration of war brought Canada into war as well. However, Canadian government could determine the level of involvement in war. On August 5,1914 the Governor general of Canada declared war on Germany and Canada raised a special expeditionary force to undertake wartime duties.
