A:Jeremiah was a Jewish prophet, or religious leader, who lived during the turbulent times immediately before the Babylonian Exile and the early years of Exile. He was the author of the Book of Jeremiah and is sometimes also credited with the Book of Lamentations, although this last is probably unlikely.

Jeremiah strongly urged the king and the people to accept rule from Babylon, saying that Babylon was to be feared if Jerusalem continued to oppose it and predicting greater suffering unless this rule was accepted.

After the fall of Jerusalem, Jeremiah settled in Tahpanhes in the eastern Nile delta, where he continued to provoke the anger of his fellow Jews with his insistence that only one God should be worshipped, a concept that did not yet have universal acceptance. He blamed the capture of Jerusalem on those Jews who had continued to worship other gods, and warning the Jews who had fled to Egypt not to worship the old gods, lest they be destroyed. His greatest criticism was for the continued worship of Asherah, the "queen of heaven" (Jereremiah 44).
