It is alleged that Catherine Howard (Henry VIII's fifth wife) fell in love with and started a relationship with Thomas Culpepper, who was a gentleman of the bedchamber. The affair soon became an open secret, but Henry VIII would not believe these allegations. Eventually a case was built against Catherine, not helped by love letters that Catherine had written to Culpepper.

When Henry knew the truth of the affair he was heartbroken and refused to see Catherine. Her arrest was ordered, but in desperation, she tried to get to the King but was taken away, screaming.

Realising her fate, Catherine admitted to the affair with Culpepper. Eventually Culpepper was executed, and Catherine herself, found guilty of adultery, was executed at the Tower of London on 13 February 1542, at the age of 21.

Catherine's screaming ghost is said to haunt a corridor at Hampton Court Palace near London, when she tried to run to the chapel where Henry was attending mass.
