Sir Wilfred Laurier was the first French Canadian Prime Minister of Canada and he served from 1896 to 1911. He was a member of the Liberal Party and believed in cooperative government between the parties to further expand, and decentralize federalism throughout the country. It was statesmen of his calibre, both English and French, who eased the country toward the concept of shared power between the two main ethnic populations.
Over the years, the office of Prime Minister has alternated between an English and a French Canadian politician.
