Major Henry Rathbone was a Union Army officer who was present at Ford's Theatre when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in 1865. Rathbone tried to intervene but was slashed with a knife by Booth, sustaining injuries. He later married Clara Harris, Lincoln's step-sister, and the couple had a tragic end when Rathbone suffered from mental illness and eventually killed Clara before attempting to take his own life.
