Major Henry Reed Rathbone, US Army and his fiancee Clara Harris were Lincoln's guests at Ford Theatre that evening, and Rathbone's arm was slashed by Booth when he tried to prevent Booth's escape. Rathbone's physical wound healed but he was depressed about not being able to prevent Lincoln's assassination. He and Clara married and in 1882 he became the Consul to Hanover, Germany. On 23 December 1883 he murdered Clara and stabbed himself. He spent the remainder of his life in a German mental hospital.
