Cinco de Mayo was a battle during the Second Franco-Mexican War (1861 - 1867). At the time of the battle (May 5th, 1862) French forces tried to occupy the city of Mexico, but were defeated at the city of Puebla.
At the time, Benito Juarez was still the president of Mexico, residing in Mexico City's National Palace.
On Cinco de Mayo, Mexico beat their opponent (which is France) and now it is celebrated
Cinco the Mayo is not Mexico's Independence day, which is September 16.
