According to the Book of Mormon, Mormon and Moroni were the last two prophets and historians on the American continent before the Great Apostasy. The Book of Mormon is called such because Mormon abridged the writings of the prophets before him that were on the American continent.

Answer

Mormon and Moroni were two inhabitants of the ancient Americas. Mormon was Moroni's father and was responsible for abridging the record of his people, which spanned a period of about 1000 years. This book was translated by Joseph Smith, through the power and direction of God, and published in 1830. Moroni, Mormon's son, was the last living, righteous person of his people, the Nephites. He lived to see the complete destruction of his people by their enemies, the Lamanites. He was entrusted with the ancient record which his father, Mormon, had abridged. He added to the record and finally buried it in the Hill Cumorah in about 421 A.D. Moroni appeared as a resurrected being to Joseph Smith and led him to the record, which Joseph was instructed to translate in the process of restoring the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ to the earth.

Moroni is the name of two individuals from the Book of Mormon, which is used as an additional collection of scripture by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other groups within in the Mormonism religious movement.

The first is Captain Moroni. He was a righteous military commander who inspired the Nephites to fight for freedom with his "Title of Liberty" - a sort of flag with a written declaration that they would fight to defend their families and their faith.

The second is the Son of Mormon and the last Nephite prophet. He abridged and compiled the Nephite record, witnessed the destruction of his people, and hid the record underground at God's command. He later became the Angel Moroni, who lead Joseph Smith to the buried record and is depicted as an angel statue on the spire of most Mormon temples.

Where did the angel of Moroni come from?

Moroni was originally a man found in the Book of Mormon. There are two mentioned there. One who is a military captain, and another who is the son of Mormon (the man who compiled the Book of Mormon). Angel Moroni is Moroni, son of Mormon. This Moroni is the last prophet of the Book of Mormon, who lived in about 421 a.d. As the last rememaining prophet before all the world went apostate (the Christians in the Old World had already fallen away by this time), it was his duty to restore what was lost to these latter days. He did so by returning to the earth as an angel, teaching Joseph Smith and giving him the Book of Mormon. A statue of the Angel Moroni is found on the majority of the Temples of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as he has become a symbol of the restoration of ancient truths.

Where does captian moroni point?

Captain Moroni points the Nephite military in the right direction... If you are referring to the Moroni statue found on Mormon temples, that is the prophet Moroni, not captain Moroni. They are two different men with the same name, and lived about 500 years apart. The Moroni statue most often faces east, but not always.
