PLANTATION
Historically, most of the work on large plantations was done by enslaved people who were brought from Africa to work on the plantations. They were forced to work long hours in harsh conditions, often with little or no pay, and were subjected to violence and other forms of abuse by their owners. In some cases, after the abolition of slavery, large plantations continued to rely on labor provided by sharecroppers or tenant farmers, who were often poor and had limited options for employment. These workers would often receive a portion of the harvest as payment for their labor, but were also subject to exploitative practices by plantation owners. Today, the labor on large plantations is often done by hired workers, who may be local or brought in from other areas. These workers are typically paid wages and may have some legal protections, but they can still face difficult working conditions and low pay, particularly in countries with weak labor laws and enforcement.

A plantation overseer is like a foreman - a person in charge to make sure work is done and employees are managed. Addendum. A plantation officer is not like a foreman who works with legally employed people who willingly sign a contract to do a work. They are enforcers who make sure people do the work a master wants done whether the enslaved want to or not.

Large farms that have labor intensive crops, or large amounts of land required large work forces. Slaves were bought to work on large plantations as a sort of free form of labour for the slave owners.
