Nicholas Alexandrovich Romanov II (Nicholas II) was the last ruler of Imperial Russia. He was the eldest son of Alexander Romanov, the previous Tsar. However, the young Tsarevich wasn't prepared for his eventual correnation. His father was disappointed in is heir, and actually favored his younger brother, Mikhail. Around the age of twenty, Nicholas laid eyes upon the beautiful German princess Alix of Hesse and by Rhine and fell madly in love with her. He declared that he wanted her to be his bride and the empress of all Russia. Naturally, his father was once again disappointed by his son, but due to failing health, agreed to their union and the two were married shortly after Alexander's death. Many Russians saw this as an ominous premonition for the fate of Russia. Upon converting to Russian Orthodoxy, Princess Alix took the new name Alexandra Feodorovna Romanova in hopes of winning over her people. However, she was shy and rarely appeared in public, causing a bad relationship with the people, who saw her as snooty and full of herself. The Tsar himself was not a pushy man, and was often chided by his new bride into doing things. He hated the confinement of the palace and felt more at home on the warfront. Nicholas also prefered to adhere to the old ways and was resistant to change. Due to not being properly prepared by his father, Nicholas was incompitent and rule, and his wife was certainly no better. Russia fell into chaos and whispers of revolution began to spread. In 1905, before the birth of his fifth child and only heir, the people marched on the Winter Palace in peaceful protest to ask for more liberties. Fearful of losing his power, Nicholas ordered his troops to open fire on the crowd which became known as Bloody Sunday. After realizing his mistake, he quickly signed the October Manifesto, which granted more power and freedom to the serfs. However, his incompitent rule led to another revolt in 1917, and this one could not be sequestered. The revolution was lead by the Communist visionary Vladimir Illyach Lenin. His bolshevik troops stormed the Winter Palace putting the imperial amily under house arrest. Shortly thereafter, Nicholas advocated the throne. The family was sent to Siberia, and later Ekaterinburg. Though hated by many Russians, Nicholas still had a certain charm about him that made the guards admire and respect him. It was only when he reached Ekaterinburg that the guards were less favorable towards him. He kept most of his thoughts to himself, and he believed that his pain and suffering would redeem the soul of all of Russia. His extremely devout wife saw him as a martyr for his country. He did not complain, but rather held his head high as the people of Russia scorned his name. On July 17, 1918, the family was lead down into the cellar of the Ipatiev House where they'd been kept as prisoners. The bolshevik commander, Yakov Yurovsky read off a death sentence from the Kremlin and the guards opened fire. After 40 minutes of firing, the Romanovs and the last ties to the old ways of Imperial Russia were dead.
