A handful of English settlers had moved from a failed settlement at Cape Ann to an Indian fishing village known as Naumkeag as early as 1626. That was the site that would become Salem, Massachusetts.
The Massachusetts Bay Company purchased the territory from the proprietors of the Plymouth Colony (which had been founded in 1620) and established a permanent settlement at Naumkeag in 1628, which they named Salem in 1629.
Salem was largely populated by English separatists, also known as Puritans. Unlike the Plymouth Colony, most of the settlers at Salem came directly from England, and not by way of Holland.
Salem was named after Michal Salem
