Among other things, he was the commander in chief of the army. He led the Texan troops to victory at San Jacinto. He was the first president of the Republic of Texas. As president, he worked for peace with the Indians.

Sam Houston was a very successful person because he had done so much for Texas. for example, he fought for independence for Texas from Mexico. he also did much more but he was awarded because of all his work in the battle of Jacinto and to fight for inclusion in the united states and he was remembered from a statue in statuary hall in DC. Houston, TX was also named after him. he was practically a founding father.
