Sebastian was a ranking officer in the Roam army and a personal favorite of the emperor. He refused an order to persecute Christians and was given an opportunity by the emperor to renounce his Christian faith and follow orders. he refused and was executed by being shot with numerous arrows and left for dead. A close friend nursed him back to health and he returned to preach openly on the streets of Rome. The emperor had him arrested again and executed.

The Catholic Encyclopedia tells us that St Sebastian was a Christian martyr of the late third century, but that little more than the fact of his martyrdom can be proved about him. In fact, his martyrdom and even his existence can not be absolutely proven.

The Acts formerly ascribed erroneously to Ambrose, but probably written at the beginning of the fifth century, relate that Sebastian came from Milan. Sebastian was an officer in the imperial bodyguard, and had secretly done many acts of love and charity for his brethren in the Faith. When he was finally discovered to be a Christian in 286, he was handed over to the Mauretanian archers, who pierced him with arrows; he was healed, however, by St. Irene. He was finally killed by the blows of a club. The Catholic Encyclopedia says these stories are unhistorical and not worthy of belief.
