Honest Abe or The RailsplitterHonest Abe, and The Illinois Rail Splitter are among the most popular.Abe
As a young man, he worked as a railsplitter, among his jobs. Reportedly he was very good at it. When he ran for President, his campaigners advertised his humble background, including his birth in a log cabin and his skill at manual labor.
Lincoln was billed as the rail-splitter because that was a job he did when he was younger and I think the people who ran campaigns thought it gave him a common touch that would appeal to some voters. (In case you do not know, a rail is a part of a log that was used to build rail fences. Logs about 5 feet long were split length wise using a wedge and an ax into one or maybe four parts. It was hard work. The rails were put together in a characteristic way to build a fence . Such fences can be seen in historical locations now. When I was a boy back in 1950, you could still see a few rail fences along the highways in Missouri. )
It has been postulated that Abraham Lincoln's first job was that of a rail splitter. However, it is most likely that it was simply farm work that was so prevalent in the area.
