General Bernard "Monty" Montgomery is probably who you are referring to. He defeated the famous German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel at the Battle of El Alamein (which was in North Africa), thus securing himself a position as one of the most successful British commanders in the war; he also participated in the invasion of Italy and Normandy/France. Of course, he was the brains behind the nearly disastrous "Operation Market Garden", so he certainly wasn't perfect.
