Alaska was purchased from Russia by the United States in 1867 at the behest of Secretary of State William Seward. As many people thought that the transaction involved paying good money for a barren wasteland, it was often referred to at the time as "Seward's Folly." Subsequent discovery of, among other things, huge oil reserves in Alaska have put lie to that characterization.
