He wanted to gain territory from Austria-Hungary
Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Italy were central powers during world war 1 while France, Russia, and Great Britain were allied powers .
Austria-Hungary I would like to improve the first answer as follows. Since Austria was "absorbed" by Germany in 1938, it was no more an independent Country, but a part of Grossdeutschland (The Great Germany) so that it cannot be considered as an allied Country. Thus, the Hungary was the only Country allied with Germany in both wars. To further clarify the matter, we must say that, at the outbreak of WW1, Austria-Hungary was the union of Austrian Empire and Reign of Hungary. The sovereign of Austria, Francis Joseph's title was Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary. That union was dissolved after the end of the war.
during WW1 it was basically the central powers vs. the allied powers. the central powers were GGermany, Austria-Hungary, and their allies, BBulgaria, and the ottoman empire. while the allied powers were the U.S., great Britain, France.
