Many later Romans felt that when Rome later acquired an empire and great wealth, this corrupted the elite. It created greed, a thirst for wealth and power and power conflicts. Cincinnatus was given supreme power twice and twice he resigned as soon as he accomplished the task he was given, rather than hold on to power for longer.
