In 1857, during the Crimean War, Queen Victoria ordered a new honor for bravery and valor. She commanded that all of the crosses be made from two cannons captured from the Russians at the Siege of Sevastopol, although this wasn't always done. It was first awarded to over a hundred people in one ceremony on June 26 of 1857. The first dude standing in line was Charles Davis Lucas.
