The First act of heroism for which a Medal of Honor was awarded was performed on 13 February 1861 at Apache Pass, Arizona. It was to Bernard J. D. Irwin, an Army Assistant Surgeon. He did not receive the medal until 1894. The first medal of honor was awarded to Pvt Jacob Parrott of the union states in April 1865 for sneaking behind confederate lines to blow up a railroad depot
