Bathsheba was the wife of Uriah the Hittite who began a adulterous relationship with King David when he saw her bathing on a roof. Bathsheba became pregnant and in order to hide this from her husband David arranged leave from the army for Uriah hoping that he would once again consummate his marriage and accept the child as his. Unfortunately in accordance with religious tradition Uriah refused to sleep with Bathsheba while he was an active soldier so David formulated a plan with his General Joab whereby Uriah would be sacrificed to the enemy during the next military engagement. This action displeased the Lord and he sent a prophet to David to relay the tale of a rich man who takes a lamb from a poor man. The child sickened and died David accepting this as the Lordś punishment married Batheheba and made her son Soloman his heir
