In 1869 he headed west and reached Dodge City at the age of 16 where he got a job with the Duval Ranch. Later, in 1872 he would move on to work in Arizona and was nicknamed Red River Dick. In the spring of 1876 he was sent to deliver a herd of 3,000 steers to Deadwood South Dakota. They arrived on July 3rd just in time for the 4th of July celebration. One of the events included a cowboy contest with a 200 cash prize. Nat won the contest and was given the new nickname of Deadwood Dick.
