What effect did the rule of Louis XIV have on his second successor Louis XVI?

AnswerLouis XV was the King of France and had Louis XVI (his grandson) as his successor. Louis XVI was only 19 years of age when he became King of France (his grandfather Louis XV had died of smallpox). Louis XVI, unlike his two younger brothers, never wanted to become King of France. He was very decisive less and shy, wanted nothing but the best for his French people, but did not know how to reign his country best. Therefore, during Louis XIV's and Louis XV's reign, a horrible debt in the countries finances was created (400 million livres!), which was the legacy to Louis XVI. The latter never could set that straight again and was eventually guillotined for it.Louis XIV was the Sun King, le Roi Soleil. His reign was studded with success and glamour. It was he who built Versailles, a palace unrivalled before or since. He made France the dominant European power, but in doing so, as stated above, he bankrupted the state. When Louis XVI came to the throne he inherited not the glamour, but the debt, and could not successfully run his country. However, the reign of the Sun King (so-called to associate with Apollo - the Sun was the King's emblem) was not solely responsible for the failure and execution of Louis XVI

By what other titles was Louis XIV also known?

Louis the Great or the Sun King

Should King Louis XVI have been killed?

He most certainly did not. Louis XVI was a very kind, shy, man who was very indecisive, but who had a warm heart for what he called "his good people". He and his wife (Queen Marie Antoinette) donated a lot of money to hospitals, orphanage's, etc. and he tried to make the best of the situation France was in at that time (France was declared bankrupt in 1783). He was the only king France has had in a long time who actually cared more for his people, than for himself. Louis XIV and Louis XV were true narcissists and cared only for themselves, but Louis XVI really tried to make a change. It was in vain though, since France had been poor since Versailles was build (by Louis XIV) and since France decided to mingle in the American Revolution (for which there was no money and drained the treasury even further, a decision made by Louis XV). By the time it was time for Louis XVI to take over the reign of France, the French felt it was the royals' fault they were poor and decided to take the American example by revolting against them. And actually killing them.
