He was the only king France has had in a long time who actually cared more for his people, than for himself. It was in vain though, since France had been poor since Versailles was build (by Louis XIV) and since France decided to mingle in the American Revolution (for which there was no money and drained the treasury even further, a decision made by Louis XV). By the time it was time for Louis XVI to take over the reign of France, the French felt it was the royals' fault they were poor and decided to take the American example by revolting against them. And actually killing them.
