what position in society did the first African men and women have in Jamestown
No one protested the treatment of Native Americans. In fact the Native Americans outnumbered the 104 men. There was an empire of 15,000 Native Americans.
Smith came to Jamestown in it's second year and did not " go to her land". Jamestown settled on an Native American empire of 14,000 people. They took the land with no respect for the people all ready living there. If the land hadn't been the worse in the area the men of Jamestown most likely would have been attacked. As it was the Native Americans knew that there were problems with swampy land, bad water, and disease so the 104 men built a fort in the "slums" of the empire. Later, after returning to England Smith lied in his book about his role in Jamestown and his meeting of Pocahontas, but by that time she was all ready dead.

The men of Jamestown were sent by investors to make them a profit and not claim land or settle. It was by accident that it was a success. The 104 men who arrived died of diseases and starvation. Within 6 months only 34 men were alive. If it hadn't been for the introduction of tobacco by Rolfe the colony may have not succeeded at all. Tobacco saved Jamestown.
The men who started Jamestown were given funds by the East India Company and a land grant by the king.
