The person inside Springtrap was the Purple Man, the murderer from FNAF. When he was getting chased by the ghosts of the children he killed, he desperately hid inside the Spring-Bonnie suit. Little did he know that suit was dangerous, and deemed 'unsafe' by the manager. He died when the spring-locks inside the suit collapsed.
Once they found this, the place was shut down and demolished, apparently.
Later, Fazbear's Fright, a Horror attraction, was built on top of the past property. The construction crew found the suit, and decided to put it as one of the main attractions. Years of rot, decay, and neglect had impacted the suit, turning it from golden yellow to a moldy green.

Spring trap was (like pie crane said) purple guy/William Afton/ Dave. He died when he was hiding from the spirits of the children he killed. He jumped into the Spring bonnie suit and then there was the spring lock failure. That caused him to die and go on to be known as Springtrap.
