Joseph Smith, his brother, Hyrum Smith, John Taylor, and Dr. William Richards were all in the Carthage jail, when a mob of men came running towards the jail with guns in their hands. These 4 men tried to hold off the mob by holding the door shut, but the mob came through. Hyrum Smith was shot and killed immediately and Joseph Smith was shot twice in the back and twice in the chest. He died as well. John Taylor lived even though he was shot four times. Dr. William Richards also lived but was not shot.
