In early 1864 Lieutenant General US Grant became the last general to be the general in chief of US armies in the East and the West. Prior to Grant, the first general in chief was Winfield Scott. When he retired, President Lincoln appointed General George B. McClellan to that position. Later General Henry Halleck was appointed to the position.
