Here are some facts about the Pilgrims' first winter:

Perhaps around one third of them died before and during the first winter.

They helped themselves to some Native's storehouses of corn and other vegetables.

They were attacked by Natives, but drove them off with musket fire.

The following Spring, an English-speaking Native came and helped them a little in surviving.

This Native called on the only surviving Patuxet Native, Squanto, who had lived in England, to help.

Squanto helped and guided the Pilgrims who survived and had a good harvest that Fall.

The Pilgrims celebrated the English custom of "Harvest Home" - 3 or 4 days of eating, hunting, games, and so forth.

Some 90 Wampanoag Natives dropped by with 5 deer and other edibles, and participated, because they had their own harvest celebrations every year.

So it seems that the Natives actually helped the Pilgrims survive their second year in what would later be called America.
