From 1916 to 1945 dimes carried a picture of Miss Liberty wearing a winged liberty cap. The wings signify freedom. However, the image bore such a strong resemblance to the Greek god Mercury that the coins were almost immediately nicknamed "Mercury dimes" and that name has stuck ever since.
