Patient Zero was supposedly the initial source of HIV spread in the US. The term comes from an early CDC study in which the source patient was identified as Patient O for the letter O. The press incorrectly reported it as a zero and that misnomer has stuck ever since.
The study involved an actual patient, Gaetan Dugas, who was a flight attendant and was associated with a number of known cases of HIV in various parts of the US. The study attempted to locate a source using standard STD surveillance methods. The study was the inspiration for the movie "And The Band Played On", which gives a very poor representation of those methods.
It is unlikely that Mr. Dugas was actually the source of the entire contagion in the US at that time or even much of it. The study's author has since repudiated parts of the study and much of the press coverage that surrounded it.
But, 40 of the first 248 cases of A.I.D.S. in the U.S. were traceable to "Patient Zero". Mr. Dugas died of AIDS in 1984.
