John Fitzgerald Kennedy
Officially, the US has supported all anti-communist leadership of the Republic of South Vietnam, commencing with the first president, Mr. Ngo Dinh Diem, in 1955.
Diem was assassinated the same year Kennedy was in 1963. Thieu remained president until his country fell to the communists, then evacuated to the US, and died in Boston, Mass.
Ngo Dinh Diem was the US backed leader of South Vietnam during the days before the Vietnam War started in earnest. In total, the war lasted from 1955 until 1975.
Diem until '63. Thieu until the end.
Diem was difficult to deal with. His regime had terrorized South Vietnam and was wildly unpopular (especially his brother). The CIA was in contact with generals planning to remove Diem. They were told that the United States would not oppose such a move nor punish the generals by cutting off aid. President Diem was overthrown and executed, along with his brother, on November 2, 1963. When he was informed, Maxwell Taylor remembered that Kennedy "rushed from the room with a look of shock and dismay on his face." He had not approved Diem's murder. The U.S. ambassador to South Vietnam, Henry Cabot Lodge, invited the coup leaders to the embassy and congratulated them.
US Ambassadors did not believe Diem would accomplish US goals in Vietnam.

Diem
The United States supported Ngo Dinh Diem as ruler of South Korea in his fight against the communists in North Korea. The US gave support to Diem for much of his rule, but eventually allowed him to be overthrown and assassinated without resistance.
The US was supporting South Vietnam. The US opposed the communist North Vietnam, which was led by Ho Chi Minh. South Vietnam was ruled by President Diem (pronounced like Z-M) who was later assassinated by South Vietnam rebels. The people of South Vietnam rebelled against Diem because he was Catholic and tried to change the people's religion form Buddhism to Catholicism. Kennedy and everyone saw the pictures of the Buddhist monks setting themselves on fire and it leaked out that the US favored a coup (pronounced like coo) and the takeover by other officials led to the assassination of Diem.Kennedy also funded a CIA operation which encouraged the overthrow, and indirectly ended in Diem's assassination.
