It had been settled decades earlier, but statehood was delayed because the state was largely populated by Mormons, whose religious beliefs seemed strange to the rest of the country, especially their belief in polygamy, the right of a man to marry several women. During this time, the US government sent a Governor to be the chief executive of the Utah Territory. Eventually the Mormons officially outlawed polygamy and Congress voted Utah into the union as the 45th state.
