Sikhism is a religion created by God through Sikh Gurus.
There is nothing special about being a Sikh. Just as every religion has its own idea about God,life, death, beginning, end, salvation etc. So does Sikhism has its own idea.
Sikhism was founded on the teachings of Nanak and the 9 succeeding gurus. Nanak lived in the late 15th century. He was born in 1469 and died in 1538. When Nanak was 30 he went missing for 3 days. When he returned he answered any question by saying, "There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim." This was the beginning of Sikhism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikhism#History
Sikhism started when Guru Nanak received divine word from God at the approximate age of thirty. Guru Nanak was born in 1469 so a rough date for the beginning of Sikhism would be 1499.
