From 27 BC, when Augustus became the first emperor to the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire in 476 AD there were 177 emperors. After the fall of the western part, the eastern part of the empire continued to exist for another 1,000 years (until 1453 AD) and there were 89 more emperors. This makes a total of 266 emperors.

The figures include 9 emperors who seceded from the Roman Empire (6 'Gallic' ones which led a secession of Gaul, Hispania and Britannia which lasted 14 years, and 2 'British' ones who led a secession of Britannia and northern Gaul which lasted 10 years).
