There is plenty of evidence to suggest that Hitler was actually fond of the British and that Operation Sealion, the planned invasion of Britain was merely a feint to force the British into a surrender or peace discussion. In order to render Britain vulnerable to an invasion the Royal Air Force first had to be neutralized. The Luftwaffe began to target airfields and the RAF. At one point they had brought the RAF to a situation where they were almost completely destroyed. Then one night, a German bomber crew was lost, believing they were over the fields of Hertfordshire, they jettisoned their bombs, which actually then fell over London. The RAF immediately retalliated with a raid on Berlin. Hitler was shocked by this and although he was only a few days away from total destruction of the RAF, switched the luftwaffe to attacking London and other cities. Thus began indiscriminate bombing of cities in World War 2. This allowed the RAF valuable time to repair its airfields, recover and regroup, ultimately saving them from total destruction. By bombing London, Hitler caused the RAF to wreak a much greater destruction on German cities later on in the war. It is often wondered why the allies bombed German cities indiscriminately, but once the allied leaders met at Yalta in 1943, it was clear they would not accept anything but total unconditional surrender. They knew about the Holocaust/genocide by that time and the decision to create firestorms and to blitz German cities may have taken these factors into account, to make ordinary German people suffer and resent their leadership. If anything Blitzing cities just made populations even more resilient to the enemy. Also by blitzing a city and creating craters, piles of rubble and destroying buildings, an air force was actually creating the perfect place for the enemy to defend. This happened in Caen and also at Monte Cassino, by bombing these defences, the Allies simply created a much more inhospitable environment which proved much harder to assault.

By daytime, bombers could target specific installations and factories, by night-time the bombing was indiscriminate and targeted general areas.

Did the blitz kill animals?

Absolutely. Not on purpose, animals were not targeted. But the Germans were dropping bombs on blacked out cities. Pets were not allowed in air raid shelters. Wild birds, squirrels and rabbits and so on had no idea where to go or what to do. The blitz was indiscriminate in its violence and any living thing could be killed by it. I believe I remember that the London Zoo happened to be hit in one raid.
