Pretty sure its Neil Armstrong
Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon, but he was also only 1 of 12 to accomplish the same feat between July 1969 and Dec. 1972.
The list of men who walked on the moon, in the order they did it are:
Neil Armstrong
Buzz Aldrin
Pete Conrad
Alan Bean
Alan Shepard
Ed Mitchell
Dave Scott
Jim Irwin
John Young
Charlie Duke
Gene Cernan
Harrison Schmitt
The first man to step on the moon was Neil Armstrong. He and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin
landed on the moon in July 1969, and climbed out of the "Lunar Excursion Module"
on July 16. The third member of the Apollo 11 crew, Michael Collins, remained in
lunar orbit aboard the command module, and did not land.
The first three men to travel to the moon (without landing on it) were William Anders, Frank Borman, and James Lovell in the Apollo 8 mission. The first two men to land on the moon were Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin in the Apollo 11 mission. The first to walk on the moon was Mr. Armstrong.
Frank Borman, Bill Anders and Jim Lovell were the first human beings to orbit the moon in Apollo 8 in 1968. It could be argued that these three men were the first to "travel to the moon" as you asked. They didn't land or set foot on the moon's surface.
So far, twelve American men, 11 of whom have been military pilots, have visited the Moon. There have been no visitors to the Moon in the last 37 years.
When I was young, I fully expected to see the first men visit the Moon in my lifetime. I could never have guessed that I would also live to see the LAST men to ever visit the Moon, but that's how it seems to be happening.
Neil Armstrong was the first man to set foot on the moon, followed by Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin. Michael Collins remained in orbit of the moon, and was part of that mission, which took place in July 1969. In December 1968 Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders had become the first people to travel to the moon, but they did not land on it. Their ship orbited the moon only.
