The Aztec emperor during the Spanish conquest was Moctezuma II. He was the ninth tlatoani, or ruler, of the Aztec Empire from 1502 until his death in 1520. Moctezuma II initially welcomed the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés but later became a prisoner in his own palace.

In 1521, the year Spain conquered the Aztecs, Cuauhtémoc was the leader of the Aztecs. In 1525, Cuauhtémoc was executed by the Spanish.

Over time, the majority of Aztecs adopted Christianity as their religion, although some indigenous practices and beliefs were also integrated into their faith.
