The British kicked out the Italian occupation army that had been there since 1936. Before that, Ethiopia had always been an independent country.
All of them, with two exceptions: Liberia Ethiopia (Italy attempted to colonize Ethiopia in 1936, and successfully controlled it until the British drove Italy out in 1941).
Ethiopia has always been independent. It was conquered by Italy in 1936 but the Italians were ejected afew years later by British Commonwealth troops during World War Two.
Mussolini occupied Ethiopia for 5 years (1936--1941). Before he got involved in WW2 the British and tolerated this invasion because they thought it would help to keep Italy out of the war. When Hitler forced Mussolini to mobilise Italian troop to support the German troops, British policy changed. The Italians became enemies and the British sent a force to Ethiopia. Together with patriot Ethiopian fighters, they officially liberated Ethiopia.
Italy attempted to have Ethiopia, or part of it, as a colony twice, in 1889 when they were defeated in battle by the Ethiopian army and again in 1936 when they succeeded in their invasion. The Italians were defeated in 1941 by British Commonwealth forces assisted by local fighters. Afterwards Ethiopia was recognised as a full sovereign country.
Italy possessed the country in 1936.

On 3 October 1935 Italy invaded Ethiopia and fought a brief war against the poorly armed Ethiopians. In May of 1936 Italy annexed the country. This was a certain indication that the League of Nations was a failure.
Ethiopia has never been colonized, despite several attempts from various countries like England and Italy. In fact Italians were defeated by Ethiopians in the battle of Adwa in their attempt to capture Ethiopia. Later just before WWII Ethiopia fell under the occupation of Italians (1936-1940) and they were ousted by the combined forces of Britain and Ethiopia, in WWII British campaign So no date of Independence.
