One well-known figure who fits this description is Sir Francis Drake. He was an English explorer and privateer who undertook numerous expeditions to the Americas and circumnavigated the globe. Drake is often remembered for his successful raids on Spanish ships and his role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588.
Amerigo Vespucci was an Italian explorer after whom America was named. Amerigo explored the south cost of America and named the continent in his honor.
