General George Washington was joined by a French army led by General Count of Rochambeau, above New York City. The allied force started marching against Cornwallis.
They reached Williamsburg, where they were joined by Lafayette's force, reinforced by other French troops landed by French Admiral De Grasse.
From Williamsburg they marched eastward against the British defenses.

Because Washington led some of that battles in the Revolutionary War, which caused a big difference in getting our freedom. The people were willing to trust Washington as President because they believed that his leadership brought victory to the Revolutionary War.
In the Battleof Princeton, Jan. 3, 1777, Washington brought up militia to reinforce fleeing columns. Upon seeing the fleeing men, his own troops began to retreat. Shouting "Parade with us, mybrave fellows!" Washington rallied the militia and personally led them to victory against the rear of Cornwallis' army. The engagement followed by a little more than a week Washington's famous tacticalvictory at Trenton,serving to harrass the British out of New Jersey, and reinvigorate flagging support in Congress and throughout the colonies.
