Between 1796 when the firt British arrived on the island, the island was governed from Madras. On the 12th October 1798, the first island govenor was Frederick North until 19th July 1805. The Dominion of Ceylon was created in 1948 with the office of Govenor General and this office was abolished in 1972 when Sri Lanka became a Republic
