Daughter of a Bulgarian immigrant, Rousseff was formerly a socialist guerilla who fought against the military Dictatorship at the time. After her capture, imprisonment and release, she became an economist and later a politician. As president, Rousseff was later impeached and replaced by Vice President Michael Temer.
