Blaise Compaoré was the President of Burkina Faso in 2006. He was first made president on 1987 October 15 serving until 2014 October 31. He was first elected on 1991 December, getting re-elected in 1998, 2005 and 2010.
Burkina Faso's constitution now only allows a President to serve two terms of five years each maximum. This law was not passed until 2000, and not enacted until 2005, after Compaoré's re-election in 2005. Protests and rebellion in 2011 led to a constitutional change committee being formed. However, Compaoré attempted to amend the constitution in 2014 to let him cling to power. He was overthrown by protesters backed by the military as Compaoré fled to the Ivory Coast in exile. Presidential Elections would not take place until a year late on 2015 November 29.
