Jalal Talabani was the President of Iraq in 2008. He assumed office on 2005 April 7 as the first elected president under the country's new constitution, created after Saddam Hussein was deposed. Talabani has a Kurdish background and has fought for Kurdish indepence and rights for over 50 years. He is also the first non-Arab president of Iraq. After the election on 2010 March 7, Talabani remained president.
