He joined the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) in 1967, and worked his way up to Commander of the LAF in 1998 December succeeding Émile Lahoud who resigned to become president. 10 years later, Suleiman was elected president and sworn in on 2008 May 25, again succeeding Lahoud in another position.
