Appointing himself Chairman of the National Reconciliation Council, he organized a national council, which created Mali's current constitution and scheduled elections for 1992, in which Alpha Oumar Konaré was made President. In 2001, he retired from the military and he ran for President in the 2002 election. He was officially made president on 2002 June 8, and was re-elected in 2007 for a second and final term. However, on 2012 March 22, there was a military coup d'etat, and Touré was forced to resign.
