Vladimir Putin has served as either the President or Prime Minister of Russia since 1999, and is widely considered the most powerful man in Russia. Formerly a Lieutenant Colonel in the KGB, Putin eventually became the Director of the Federal Security Service in 1998. Boris Yeltsin, the first President of Russia, temporarily appointed Putin the post of Prime Minister on 1999 August 9.
