Berlusconi is Italy's third richest man, with Forbes placing him as the 118th richest man in the world. He is noted for being the owner of AC Milan. Berlusconi has been investigated on many criminal charges, including corruption and of having mafia ties. He has also made many sexist and racist comments, some of which have drawn widespread ire domestically and internationally, and some of which have also led to his divorce.

Mario Monti, took power during the Italian debt crisis on 2011 November 16. After appointing a technocrat cabinet of non-elected professionals, he persuaded the government to push through sweeping austerity measures. He officially resigned on 2012 December 21, but remains prime minister until the next one is selected.
