Berlusconi served his third non-consecutive term as prime minister, from 2008 May 8 to 2011 November 16. Berlusconi was also the Prime Minister from 1994 May 10 to 1995 January 17 and 2001 June 11 to 2006 May 17.

Berlusconi has been investigated on many criminal charges, including corruption and of having mafia ties. Mario Monti, took power during the Italian debt crisis on 2011 November 16. After appointing a technocrat cabinet of non-elected professionals, he persuaded the government to push through sweeping austerity measures. He officially resigned on 2012 December 21, but remains prime minister until the next one is selected.
