He previously held other cabinet positions including the positions of Minister of Education, Minister of Home Affairs and Local Government.


Thabane originally was part of the Lesotho Congress of Democracy, but formed his own party in 2006, the Ali Basotho Convention. In 2012, he and other opposition parties had enough power to make him the prime minister.
